When Change Feels Like Moving to a Foreign Country

When I was around 5 years old I moved with my family from the US to Europe.  We lived overseas for about 4 years.  My dad worked for a large American corporation and we went to schools where we spoke English.  Changing countries for me was quite supported with all these people around me.

But, what about people who move to another country where they don’t know anyone, don’t have any idea about the culture they come to, and don’t know the language?  I’d imagine there is quite a vast array of feelings.

Making changes in our lives can feel like the same experience.  When we make significant life changing, exponential growth leaps in our lives, it very often can feel like moving to a foreign country.  We don’t know anything about the new culture, new language, new styles, social and physical environment, and relationships....

Often we don’t change because it’s so uncomfortable to be in such a foreign feeling that we settle for familiar misery with the illusion of safety.

But, what if you moved to that foreign country and there was someone there to help you acclimate?

  • Would you be more likely to want to go there?

  • Would you find it less scary if you had that support?

  • Would a translator and tour guide or welcome wagon help you understand and speak the language and understand the culture?  When we moved, my mother seemed to always find a local “welcome wagon!”

What if the language of change was learning your own internal language?  What if the acclimation to a culture was to understand your view of the world?

If you had someone to help you learn what these were, help you recognize what your intuition was saying, know how you wanted to travel in your own personal world, would you be relieved?  Excited?  Encouraged?  Feel supported?

It can be scary and overwhelming to look inside, especially when there are a lot of baggage in your life to sort through.

Learning to live in a new inner country doesn’t have to be painful or scary.  It can be exciting and freeing.

Like the airline says, “You are now free to move around the country” – your inner country!  Just ask me how and I’ll be your travel agent and help you find your way!
